D#14 HW#6 Course companticies deadline reflections
I. Applying Knowledge of Rhetorical Contexts
A. Circumstance
I learned that it is important to narrow the research topic that I chose, to look for karios (by the way that was also a new word I learned), and to figure out the purpose and audience for my research papers
B. Purpose
I think the reading helped me the most with creating my conclusion paragraph of my essay.
C. Topic
D. Audience
These things are important so as to not bore the reader and to make my paper interesting enough that I will want to write it
E. Writer
Writing the essay was a course goal so i guess it helped with that aspect of it. It helped me better understand how to conclude a paper, which is part of the writing process.
II. Refining Effective Processes
A. Invention
B. Drafting
Well this week we had to write up a draft so we are most of the way toward that goal. I learn by doing so as i was writing the proposal i learned how to write one.
C. Feedback
learned how to peer edit, something I haven't really done much before. I also got peer edited which will help me make my paper better to :)
D. Revision
E. Presentation
this weeks work helped me achieve my goal of turning a good research proposal. Since I have never written one before it really helped me learn how to wright one.
III. Researching Critically
A. Primary and secondary sources
I also think the part about identifying the type of research to be done will help my papers in the future.
B. Note taking
This weeks topic, conducting research, has really helped prepare me for my paper
C. Summary and paraphrase
It helped me to assess weather my resources were credible or not. This information is always important to know when writing a paper. If your resource isn't credible then is your paper? I would think not. I will use this is future papers to make sure my resources are crediable so my paper is through and crediable.D. Documentation of sources
We had to do some research, site our sources, read about MLA (can I say boring? ;) ) a
E. Information literacy
IV. Writing Persuasively
A. Logical appeals
B. Ethical appeals
C. Emotional appeals
D. Authority
E. Evidence
V. Applying Conventions
A. Citation style
B. Format
In addition, the grammar assignment helped me to focus on the flow of my sentences so that my paper will be better in the end.
D. Structure
My course competency this week was to figure out the organization of my paper. The web we did really help organize my thoughts. The reading also helped as it showed me where I needed to do a little more research.
E. Mechanics
D#14 HW#5 writing project reflection course compenticies
I. Applying Knowledge of Rhetorical Contexts
A. Circumstance
The first thing I did in completing this project was to brainstorm.
B. Purpose
C. Topic
The first step I did when completing this assignment was to think of a topic I wanted to know more about.
D. Audience
E. Writer
II. Refining Effective Processes
A. Invention
I then wrote what ever came to mind. I then went through and put alike paragraphs together and made sure the sentences when together.
B. Drafting
I then organized my research into a workable essay.
C. Feedback
I didn't revise my worked biased on turnitin.com because i only had a 1% match and that was a technical term so I felt I didn't need to revise because of that.
D. Revision
I then revised and edited it then turned it in.
E. Presentation
I then revised a third time and added a title
III. Researching Critically
A. Primary and secondary sources
Next, I researched the topic and wrote the review of research to make sure my resources were credible.
B. Note taking
C. Summary and paraphrase
Then I did a short annotation for each.
D. Documentation of sources
Then I reread through all my annotations and picked the sources that seamed most relevant. I then wrote longer annotations for each of the 8 sources I picked.
E. Information literacy
IV. Writing Persuasively
A. Logical appeals
B. Ethical appeals
C. Emotional appeals
D. Authority
E. Evidence
V. Applying Conventions
A. Citation style
The thing I focused in this paper was using sources in my writing. I usually just write what is on my mind so it was different haveing to use most information from sources.
B. Format
C. Structure
I then went through and put alike paragraphs together and made sure the sentences when together.
E. Mechanics
I think it helped me be more careful because when i revised, and even while writing i was specifically looking out for my spelling.
D#14HW#4 writing reflection
D#14 HW#2 editing stratigies
This strategy worked pretty well for me. I looked at each paragraph individually and I was able to pick out what was important and what was not. Also i was able to add a bit to a few of the paragraphs. Peer editing was another strategy that I used because it worked well last time. Peer editors are able to find things you missed. The final strategy that I used was to read my paper out loud. It helps if you hear your writing because you can hear any mistakes you have made.

Orig:Because this disease is being reported in such high numbers, one might wonder what is the government doing to protect the people. For one, the US government has “has prohibited importation of ruminants and most ruminant products from countries affected by BSE.” In 1997, the FDA “implemented a ruminant-to-ruminant feeding ban for meat and bone meal as a precautionary measure,” after a case of BES was reported in the state Washington. Also that year, importation of live ruminants and most ruminant products were banned from other European countries. Likewise, since May 1990, the United States implemented a surveillance program that is based on sampling brains of cattle with suspicious neurologic symptoms. In March of 2009, Tom Lutey wrote an article for the Tribune Business News stating that the government was trying to push new beef laws that would require testing on all cattle, as well as a law that would make it tougher for sick cows to become someone’s dinner (Tribune Business News).

D#13 HW#4 peer review
http://missrodas.blogspot.com/2009/11/d12-hw8-draft-of-wp3.html
I learned alot of information from my class mates blogs. I liked how Marissa used personal testimony and how she made her argument hard to argue with. I didn't get any reviews on my draft because there are only two other people keeping up with this class and they have already finished their work.Turnitin.com also had no comments for me. I will however go and revise my own draft as I need to add to it to make it longer and I need to make sure it flows well.
D#13 HW#2 paragraph analysis
1. to invite the reader in.
2. to give some background on the subject
3. to give the history on the subject
4. proof for my argument
5-6 proof against my argument containing counter arguments that support my argument
7. to restate why it how my topic relates to my audience and to answer the big question i have been building to
8. to restate my theses and call to action/conclude
How does the paragraph function in the argument? How does the paragraph function in the paper as a whole?
1. helps draw the reader in
2-3. introduces my argument and why it is important and how it relates to my audience.
4-6. the arguements for and against my topic, proof for my argument
7-8 to restate my argument and to get the readers to agree with me then finish with a call to action
How does the paragraph relate to the paragraph above? How does the paragraph relate to the paragraph below? How does the paragraph transition to the paragraph above? How does the paragraph transition to the paragraph below?
Paragraph 1 is the start of the whole paper so it introduces the whole paper as well as paragraph two which explains what paragraph 1 started talking about. Leads in to paragraph 3 which gives the background on the issue. Paragraph 2 transitions by taking the subject in the last sentence of paragraph 2 and inserting it into sentence one of paragraph 3. Paragraph four gets in to the arguements which is the main subject of the paper. It transitions with the word "because". Paragraphs 5 and 6 both give reasons against my arguements as well as my counter arguements to those objections. They use the transition words "even with" and "another." Paragraph 7 is transitioned into by a "however" and it gives the answer to the big question people are wondering. Finally paragraph 8 in transitioned with an "ultimately" and concludes the paper highlighting the main points as well as giving a call to action and finishing with a source quote.

D#12 HW#8 Rough Draft WP#3
“All interest in disease and death is only another expression of interest in life.“
Thomas Mann
Today Americans face many worries, whether it is worrying about a lost job and a mortgage, to having too many bills. We don’t have the time to worry about what we are eating. That is why, for so many years, people have been getting sick form their food, the most common being food poisoning. But what if there was something in you food that there is no medication for, and that once symptoms start to show you are diagnosed dead. Well the bad news is that there is such a thing. It is called Bovine spongiform encephalopathy(BSE). Because this deadly disease dosnt have any cases reported in humans in America, many people would agree that the government is doing a good job of protecting its people. However, others believe there are still not enough laws in place because the possibility of getting BSE still exists. Neither can be proven write or wrong, but the evidence suggests that our government is doing a lot to protect us.
What exactly is Bovine spongiform encephalopathy? “Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a disease condition in cattle between two and eight years old and is always fatal.” Howitworks.com, a well known science website, describes why this disease is so fatal. “Once the infectious agent enters the brain, it can lie dormant for several years (even as long as 10 to 15 years). When activated, the agent kills brain cells, leaving large areas of spongy holes. Also, large clumps of abnormal prion proteins (plaques) are found in brain cells. Once the agent is activated, the disease runs its course in less than one year, and ultimately results in death.” (Freudenrich, Ph.D., Craig). The site also states that the cows become infected by contact with brain or other nervous-system tissue from an infected individual (mostly through ingestion, as seen in later paragraphs). The cause of BSE is unknown but what is known is that BSE is smaller than a virus, it can’t be killed by cooking freezing, or chemically and even disinfectants are powerless against this agent (Freudenrich, Ph.D., Craig. Howstuffworks.com). As can be seen, this agent, if ingested is fatal.
This agent, however, was not always a problem. In fact it is a newer disease. Maxime Schwartz, the author of "How The Cows Turned Mad,” did her research on the subject for the prestigious University of California. After her extensive research, (she even lists her creditable resources in the back of her book) she found that the origin of mad cow was in Europe in the 1730 and actually started with sheep and was call Distemper (p. 5). Reported cases of BSE in cows however, didn’t start until 1985, but weren’t diagnosed until two years later (p 142). First lesions were noticed all over the cows body, the cows lost nerve control and either death or slaughter occurred soon after (p. 143). These cases began popping up all over Europe. The possibility that BSE could spread to humans was considered soon after (p.153). Scientists found that it was possible thus the ban of using infectious organs such as brain, stomach, and nervous tissue since there was no way to identify animals incubating the disease (these animals showed no symptoms) from those that were healthy (p.154). Today, there are still inefficient tests that confirm the presence of BSE in healthy individuals and there have been over 185,000 confirmed cases since 1986, with less than 100 cases being reported per week (Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D.). Even though these numbers are down from what they used to be, there are still cases being reported.
Because this disease is being reported in such high numbers, one might wonder what is the government doing to protect the people.
Even with all of these measures being put in place, many still believe it is not enough. One such person is editorialist Thomas Ropp. He believes that diet pills could contain mad cow. Even though the idea sounds farfetched, he could be on to something. “The FDA has determined that some dietary supplements contain bovine pituitary extract. Translation: freeze-dried cow brain. This could be trouble if the parts used for this ingredient were to come from cows infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy, the proper name for mad cow disease” (HEALTH PILLS COULD CARRY 'MAD COW'). However, it is unlikely that this additive is in all diet pills, it is an additive that has to be labeled as cow brain or the like. The people that take these pills believe that “ingesting cow brain improves your wits” (Thomas Ropp).
Another big issue is that animal feed could be contaminated. To cut cost, some large companies feed meat to their cows and other food animals in order for them to grow more quickly. However, respectable farmers only feed their cows pre-mixed food (pellets made from organic material) from a feed lot (BSE Information). According to the FDA, it is illegal to feed ruminant animals meat or any other substance containing animal byproducts. To make sure this and other food laws are being followed, the FDA conducts ruminant feed inspections. “The FDA's December 1998 enforcement plan for the ruminant feed rule includes education as well as inspections. Firms that are found to be in violation of any of the provisions of the regulation are re-inspected to determine if they have corrected the violations. Many of the firms have committed to implementing the regulation, so there are higher levels of compliance at the time of the follow-up inspection.” (BSE Information). If the firm doesn’t straighten up by the second time they are completely shut down (BSE Information). Although some people have objections, the government is doing a good job in protect its people.
However, the question becomes: Is beef safe? According to the FDA, beef is completely safe because of all the laws and inspections they have put in place ( BSE Information). Let us take a look at the evidence, though:
1. There has only been one possible case of Mad Cow in humans in America. This person, however, used to live in the UK where 99% of the cases have occurred (Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D.).
2. There have only been a few cases of BSE in cows in the United States, thoses of which were reported and contained right away (Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D.).
3. The FDA has put in place many laws and inspections to make sure beef is safe (BSE Information) and is adding new ones everyday (Tom Lutey).
4. The US does not accept imported beef (BSE Information)
5. There could be cow brain parts in some diet pills, but the risk of contracting the disease from these is extremely low (Thomas Ropp).
6. Each year, the number of reported cases of BSE becomes less (Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D.).
It is only fair to let one make one’s own judgment at this point. It is my opinion that beef is safe for Americans to keep on eating.
Ultimately, It has been questioned whether our government is doing enough to protect the American public from the deadly beef disease. Since it is a newer disease, only Known since the early 1980’s, there isn’t a cure or a known cause yet. But because there haven’t been any confirmed cases of BSE in humans and very few in cattle, the government is doing its job quite well. There is a miniscule risk of catching BSE from eating beef and other animal byproducts, with the highest risk in ground meats like hamburger and sausage. If Americans want to lessen this risk, Americans can further reduce their risk of contracting the disease by choosing whole muscle cuts of beef like roasts and steak (Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D.). Americans can reduce the risk even still by avoiding beef and other meat byproducts all together. But as the writer, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. puts it, ““Being American is to eat a lot of beef steak, and boy, we've got a lot more beef steak than any other country, and that's why you ought to be glad you're an American” (Thinkexist.com).

D#12 HW#7 decide which presentation mode is appropriate
The requirements are posted on ENG102.com for all students to read. So see that for the fulfillment of the paper.
Audience:
The audience expects the paper to be interesting and effective. They will for sure have access to a computer. An essay is the chosen presentation form, so that is what they will respond to and that is where they will be looking for my argument. I don't think there is a specific time my audience would be interested in reading my paper. I think the other students and the teacher will be most interested in my research paper.
Topic:
An essay style presentation is the best for my topic and my argument. The ay mad cow works might be tough for my audience to picture without a diagram so i might put one in the paper.
Author:
I am most familiar with blog applications. That is where I will be posting my paper so that is all I need.
D#12 HW#6 identify possible frames
D#12HW# develop closer
D#12 HW#4 draft an effective introduction
Mad cow could happen to anyone that eats beef. A person could get it from eating their afternoon lunch, or their perfectly prepared dinner. Mad cow in meat is invisible to the naked eye as well as the rest of the 5 senses. One could be eating and not even know it. How can we protect ourselves then? Well one answer is to stop eating meat all together. However, since most people would take the risk rather then give up their precious steak, there are several other options.
This paragraph is something I could use to develop my conclusion/call to action.
D#12 HW#3 create an outline
Section 1: background information.
Section 2: establish the nature of the situation.
Section 3: establish what caused mad cow to be spread.
Section 4: argument.
Section 5: call to action/conclusion

grammer assignment #5 D#11 HW#7
Here is the original version:
A healthful weight isn’t what is on the scale, rather the amount of body fat. The BMI is the most common way of measuring overall health, but body composition is needed for people with a lot of muscle. There are several techniques used to measure body composition, most of which do not sound appealing to me, especially the BIA in which electoral current through the body. I would probably try the bod pod as it is the most accurate and least painful.
It is most important, however, to know what the fat distribution pattern which could have an impact on health. Fluctuations in the body weight are the result of fluctuations in energy intake. I notice that when I am sick, I tend to eat less and my body is working harder than normal at rest, fighting off the bug. Because of this, I tend to lose several pounds over the duration of my sickness. This makes sense because when a person is sick, they are expending more energy than they are taking in. What I didn’t know, however, was that we use more energy at rest. I have always thought it took more energy to move around then it did to just lie quietly. I also didn’t know that 10% of our energy goes in to digesting food. I didn’t think it would take that much energy, I guess that is why I feel sleepy after eating a big meal.
Here is the revised version:
A healthful weight isn’t what is on the scale, rather the amount of body fat. The BMI, a measurement of body fat, is the most common way of measuring overall health. Although the BMI is effective for most people, body composition is needed for people with a lot of muscle. There are several techniques used to measure body composition, most of which do not sound appealing to me. The BIA sounds most painful as it is measured by an electoral current passed through the body. I would, on the other hand, probably try the bod pod as it is the most accurate measurement and least painful.
Along with body composition or BMI, it is important to know one’s fat distribution pattern as this could have an impact on health. Likewise, body weight is important in staying healthy. Fluctuations could take place with increased energy intake, but it usually only fluctuates within a 5lb range. I notice this most when I am sick. When ill, I tend to eat less when my body is working harder than normal at rest, fighting off the bug. Because of this, I tend to lose several pounds over the duration of my sickness. Consequently, when a person is sick, they are expending more energy than they are taking in. What I didn’t know, however, was that we use more energy at rest. I have always thought it took more energy to move around then it did to just lie quietly. Furthermore, I didn’t know that 10% of our energy goes into digesting food. I guess that is why I feel sleepy after eating a big meal.

D#10 HW#14 project reflection
I am most proud that I got through this project. I have never written a paper like this before so I was not sure what to expect, or even how to do it. The only thing that concerns me about the next project is not knowing where to start or how to do it. However, I tried my best and got some advice from Summer that really helped. If I had more time I would like other classmates to review my paper and give me more things i could do to make it better.
I didn't get much from turnitin.com but Summer really gave me some great tips that helped me go back and revise and add to my paper.
What I specifically worked on this week was just trying to do the assignment write since this is my first time doing something like this. However with the helpful tips and learning as I went, I felt I succeeded in writing my first review of research.I believe i achieve one of my course goals of writing this paper because I did it. I tried and revised and wrote and revised, and revised some more. I think for my next writing project, my goal will be to get an A and to write an interesting paper.

The government needs to better regulate the beef industry to protect the American people from man cow.
Ethos: I base my claims on facts and back them up with facts. Yes my audience will find it to be persuasive. By only stating backed up facts, it demonstrates my credibility as an author.
Pathos: I will appeal to the fact that it could happen to my audience or their friends or family. Since these questions will get them thinking, it will be persuasive. Logos: I will use a lot of facts and research in my paper. This will make it persuasive and make my audience believe what I am saying.
I got really confused with the rest of the outline. Outlines don't help me write. If I do an outline I get bored and my writing gets sloppy and boring. I like to just write my paper then go back and organize my paper. I also go back and make sure all of the requirements are covered so that it is a good argument.

My topic is interesting to my classmates, so they have said. It doesn't affect their finances. I'm sure my audience eats beef so it affects the way they eat. The same with their friends and family.

Yes, No, to a degree, to much
I am completing this research for my research paper.
I would cross off no and too much
Yes "to a degree" would probably be most feasible to my audience. My teacher and fellow students will read my research. Most of my research agrees that the government is doing a lot to protect us but isn't doing a lot to stop the spread of it. I think this is the angle I will pursue in my argument.

My purpose of writing this is to educate on mad cow. It is also to raise questions of security on our food system. I chose this particular disease because not a lot is known about it and I am interested in learning more about it myself.
My audience is my fellow students and my teacher.
I find my self mistrusting the government so i might be bias as to weather or not they are doing a good enough job at protecting us.
My questions overlap in my interest in the subject as well as my enthusiasm in sharing it with others. This well help me to write a paper I enjoy as well as one others will enjoy.

Initial:
My hypothesis if plants don’t receive the proper nutrients then they will experience deficiency symptoms, was mostly supported. Plant one the control plant was supposed to be the tallest healthiest plant out of them all but it was only of medium height and had signs of death. Plant six was not supposed to die and it did, so we can’t really analyze it properly. The graph was also off the scale. Because plant one was not the tallest all of the percentages were extremely high in the comparison graph. These errors could be due to measurement errors by the students orit could be the plants weren’t cared for properly, or we could have just gotten a bad batch of plants.

Peer review reflection D#9HW#6
The above link is the person I peer edited. I could only do one, since she was the only one to have her rough draft completed. I learned how to wright a research review from editing Summer's. She understood the assignment and wrote a beautiful review. I need to add to mine and I need to explain what each source is and the credentials and why it is a good source for my paper. Turnitin.com didn't suggest any changes for me and i didn't get any comments on my blog either. However, i still need to add some things to my paper and edit it before i turn it in.

This resource will help me answer my question of how it works.
I only have computer copies because I don't like wasting paper and I don't have a printer.
This author has a Ph.D. so he obviously spent a lot of time researching the subject. He is backed by a major science website. The author is trying to provide information. The audience is the public. He wrote his paper easy to understand by anyone interested in science because that is who his audience is.
This resource answers how BSE effects the body. It is a different then the other resources but it connects with all of them
Yes this is a logical resource. Yes the methods are similar to the other resources.

It is very useful to answer my question on background information.
Only computer copy.
She is backed by a prestigious university so she is very credible. She wrote this to inform. She wrote this book specifically for students and because of this, she wrote it with an academic perspective.
It answers my question of where it came from. Again, it meshed with my other resources, even though it gave me different information.
Yes it is logical. And yes the methods are similar.

Throughout American history, beef has been a major food source. Today, we consume about 65 pounds per person per year. It is important that Americans realize that risk comes with eating meat. BSE(mad cow) is one of those diseases associated with beef. Although there hasn’t been a case of it reported in America yet, the risk is still there. BSE is an infection that starts in cows and is then is transferred to humans through the consumption of brain and spinal tissue. I want to explore the infection itself as well as to explore the issue of whether or not our government is doing enough to protect us. Some think that mad cow can be prevented and since there hasn’t been a case in America, our government is doing a great job. Others however, believe that since there are still cases, even if not in America, there needs to be more done to protect the people.

This is all of the how, what, why, of BSE. They don’t really describe any argument they just give the facts about it. This is an extremely important source. It will give me all of the background I need for my research.
Lutey, Tom. "Beef Rule Could Get Stricter." Tribune Business News [Washington] 20 Mar. 2009. ProQuest. Web. 3 Oct. 2009.
As long as Americans continue to eat meat, we will have a need for rules to protect us from food borne illness. Tom Lutey reports in his article that these rules keep getting stricter. However, he argues that even with this new rule, the regulations still are not strict enough. He gives a couple of example of things farmers should not be doing, and they are still getting away with.

HEALTH PILLS COULD CARRY 'MAD COW'. Arizona Republic,p. E.1. Retrieved October 11, 2009, from Arizona Republic. (Document ID: 1842321171).
Do you know what’s in your diet pills? According to Thomas Ropp, it could be mad cow. He states that even though the US has many regulations on beef, it has very few on diet pills. This is a dangerous concept. Americans could be taking something they think is healthy, when it could contain one of the deadliest diseases known to man. He suggests that the government is letting this fly by and something needs to be done about it. He feels it is important that Americans know what they are taking in. He also feels that if an American does get sick, then the government is going to have that life on their shoulders.

Are dairy products a danger?(2004, January 3). Arizona Republic,p. B.8. Retrieved October 15, 2009, from Arizona Republic. (Document ID: 1814105431).
When reading this article I was shocked to learn that BSE could be transmitted through milk. I will however have to check in to this as i have never heard that, but if i find this fact to check out, this will be a good resource.
"BSE Information." US Depatment of Health and Human Services. FDA, 6 Aug. 2009. Web. 15 Oct. 2009.
Since the FDA has all the information about food borne illnesses, I figured this was a good website to visit. It had all kinds of information I could use in my paper. Of course it is a reliable source because it is the US government, although some would argue that is why it is not reliable, this organization is straight with the facts.
Fernau, Karen. "ARIZONA BEEF EATERS NOT FEARFUL OF MAD COW." Proquest. 7 Jan. 2004. Web. 15 Oct. 2009.
I found this article to be informative. It basically just states that Arizona's residents are not fearful because the infected cows from Washington were not shipped here. It also states that loopholes are allowing cows to be fed nerve and bone tissue of other cows which spreads the infection. I will be using this to answer the question of weather the government is doing enough to protect us.
Lardy, Ph.D, Greg, Charlie Stoltenow, DVM, and Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D. "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy." North Dakota State University. NDSU, Mar. 2004. Web. 14 Oct. 2009.
In this article, three different people answer the what, how, why questions of BSE (mad cow). Each author is an expert in their respective fields, all in the farming industry, and they speak for a prestigious university. Since they answer all of the basic questions needed for my paper, I will be using their explanations in answering those what, how , why questions.

This article tells how small farmers get along with their food animals. It states how they treat their animals with respect and even kill them humanly. This article is from a well known newspaper and it gives personal testimony which can be a good thing to use in an article. It also talks about both sides of the argument, even though it is a clearly bias opinion. This is a great article to use in my paper. I would use it to show that treating animals with respect doesn't cost more because many other farms do it. Small farms are cost efficient, so we know if they can do it so can the large companies.

Original:
One night when Larry was in Vietnam, he was supposed to be on guard duty, which is basically just watching the outside of the camp for the enemy. This is a normal job that Larry had done several times before, so he wasn’t thinking anything of it. He reported for duty but the captain said that there were plenty of people so Larry’s services were not needed. Larry thought someone must have taken his place, so he went back to his tent to sleep. He said three men served on guard duty that night. The Vietcong attacked their camp that night and all three men were killed. If Larry had been serving that night, he would have been the one killed and I would not be here to tell his story, for that man, Larry Boyd, is my dad.
Revised:
Larry was scheduled to be on guard duty one night, a job in which his only task was to watch the outside of the camp for the enemy. This is a normal job that Larry had done several times before, so he wasn’t thinking anything of it. He reported for duty, but oddly the officer in charge told Larry that another person was taking that shift so Larry’s services were not needed. Larry just went back to his tent to sleep after a hard day of work. Larry said three men served on guard duty that night. The Vietcong attacked the station that night and all three men were killed. If Larry had been stationed that night, he would have been the one killed and I would not be here to tell his story, for that man, Larry Boyd, is my dad.
I went to the dailywritingtips.com web site and got a few tips on how to word properly. Basically you just have to read it out loud to know if it sounds good. If you can say it without a problem, then your sentence is fine.

The complete ban is likely to hurt smaller ranches and feedlots, who survive on small profit margins, Bullard said. The cost of losing an otherwise healthy animal to injury could hurt small operators, who the USDA says accounts for 95 percent of slaughtered downer cows, believed to number about 1,500 annually.
If there is a complete ban of downer cattle, it would hurt small ranchers because they make up about 95% of slaughtered cattle.
I think it would be best to paraphrase here.

I am most proud of the whole thing. I think it turned out nicely. My only concern is that I missed something. I did however, revisit the assignment criteria and made sure it matched. If I had more time i would probably ask others opinions to make sure it matched the criteria. I didn't revise my worked biased on turnitin.com because i only had a 1% match and that was a technical term so I felt I didn't need to revise because of that. I worked on spelling for this project. I think it helped me be more careful because when i revised, and even while writing i was specifically looking out for my spelling. I think for the next project I will work on sentence structure just to make some improvements. The course outcome i was leaning towards was to get an A in the class. However, I became really interested in my subject and when that happened, I started writing because i wanted everyone else to be interested in my subject too. I did feel I achieved this goal because everyone was leaving comments on how they couldn't wait to read my paper. I think my next outcome will be for everyone to understand my opinion and to lean towards it as well. But if not, an A is always nice. ;)

What does this have to do with a research paper? Well, I have been researching for a while the reasons behind why farm animals are abuses. Mostly it is because large dairies and farms just don’t care about the animals, they care about the money they make. Because of this selfish attitude, we have many humans getting sick due to meat and animal product illnesses. One of the most well known diseases is known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease.
Here is the revised paragraph:
What does this have to do with a research paper? Well, I had been researching the topic of farm animal abuse before i decided to write a research paper. I found that most of the abuse was because large dairies and farms just didn't care about the animals, they cared only for the money they made off of them. Because of this selfish attitude, we have had many humans get sick due to meat and animal product illness. One of the most well known of these diseases is the bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease.
One of the tricks I learned is just to say the sentence out loud. This way you can hear what it sounds like and its easier to hear the mistakes. Another trick is to use the finder to find all the haves and hads in the paragraph and change it all to one tense.

After reading other peoples drafts and reviewing them, I learned that the easiest way to review is to write notes as you go along, and not to look at just mistakes, but to look at the content as well. For my own draft, I need to add how i am going to conduct research as well as to add descrpitive words to my paper. I also learned that it is important to tell the author when you are confused about something and give comments on how they might make their paper better. If we only said good things about each others paper, we wouldn't know what needs to be fixed. Summer reviewed my paper and had alot of questions. The only problem is that i planned on answering her questions in the research paper itself, but i think i might state this in my paper, just so everyone will want to read it. SHe id however, give me some more ideas of what to write about in my paper, with what she wanted to know more about. My report was only a 1% match. This is because it is a common virus and a lot of people have to explain what it is after they put in a name people wont recognize. However, i do have some editing to do before i turn my paper in. I will probably add some more to it to clear up questions people might have.

Research proposal D#4 HW#9
I have always loved animals. Ever since I was a little girl I have wanted to be a veterinarian. I had this doctor play set that I would use to “fix” my sick stuffed animals. I also used to wander around the neighborhood playing with all of the neighbor’s animals. I have never even thought of a different job I could ever do when I “grow up” besides taking care of animals. However, it wasn’t until high school that I discovered which type I truly loved best.
I was in my junior year of high school when I decided it would be fun to take an animal science class. Not only did it fill a science requirement, it would be a fun class since it was all about animals. In this class, we were given a project. The teacher had saved some baby bulls from a dairy where they were basically thrown away. These bulls were skinny from starvation and sick from who knows what. The farmers refused to give these babies any food since the bulls were of no use to the farmers. The farmers just took them and threw them out back to die. Now since they had a large dairy, no legal action was taken against them. But thankfully for the baby cows my teacher saved them.
Each of the students, including myself, were given one of these calves to take care of and try to nurse back to health. I was excited because this is the kind of thing I wanted to do when I “grew up”. I took care of the bull yo the best of my ability. I went to that farm every day and night to feed that bull ( I even gave it the name of “Little Moo”), I played with it and walked it, and I even gave it shots of antibiotics and had to give it pills to help it get better ( as I explained earlier, these bulls were in bad shape). After about a month, I am sad to say that Little Moo, as well as many of the other baby bulls died, due to the illnesses they received from the dairy. This experience inspired me to pursue a degree in large animal veterinary medicine. And, after earning my degree, I plan to open a rescue center for abused and abandoned farm animals.
Since mad cow disease is a food borne illness, it does not affect everyone. Vegans and vegetarians have nothing to worry about since they don’t eat meat. However, it was found that the average American consumes 67lbs of beef per year (Economic research service). Why so much? It is easy to get, very tasty, cheap, and an American classic. When we thing American food what is the first thing we usually think of? Grilled hamburgers and frenchfrys. By serving this tasty American classic, Mc Donald’s has become the number one fast food company in the world with over $23,522.4M in sales, 32,000 restaurants (14,000 of which are in America) in 120 different countries and 400,000 employees (answers.com). There is hardly a kid in America who doesn’t know what the golden arches mean. Parents love it because it is cheap and easy. If they are tired after work and don’t feel like cooking, they just buy their kid a happy meal for three bucks. If you are a college kid on a budget, you can go to Mickey D’s and get a burger for a buck versus the three bucks for a little parfait at the campus cafeteria. And it’s not just Mc Donald’s with cheap beef. There are other fast food restaurants including Arby’s, Taco Bell, burger king, Wendy’s, and Filaburtos just to name a few. There are thousands of people eating at these places every day. Can you imagine if one of these places received beef tainted with mad cow disease?
This issue affects us all. I, like most of my fellow students, am beef eater. I only eat it a couple times a month, but once is all it takes. This is an issue that has an effect on all of us. You might not be a meat eater yourself, but I am sure you have a friend or family member that enjoys beef. We might wonder is beef safe at all? In my opinion, it is safe, depending on where it comes from and what part of the cow is consumed. I also believe that mad cow wouldn’t be a problem if farmers took care of their cows properly and the FDA did their jobs correctly. There wouldn’t be cases of mad cow in humans if the FDA put certain regulations in place and checked ALL meat properly before it was given to consumers. However, it is the belief of others that mad cow is strictly a disease in which cows get naturally and there is no way to prevent them from getting it. I plan to research the subject fully and present the facts and statements for both sides of this argument as well as to answer the following questions:
-What is mad cow disease?
-How do cows get it?
-How is it transmitted to humans?
-How does this disease affect humans and cows alike?
-What, if anything, can be done to prevent this epidemic?
