Throughout American history, beef has been a major food source. Today, we consume about 65 pounds per person per year. It is important that Americans realize that risk comes with eating meat. BSE(mad cow) is one of those diseases associated with beef. Although there hasn’t been a case of it reported in America yet, the risk is still there. BSE is an infection that starts in cows and is then is transferred to humans through the consumption of brain and spinal tissue. I want to explore the infection itself as well as to explore the issue of whether or not our government is doing enough to protect us. Some think that mad cow can be prevented and since there hasn’t been a case in America, our government is doing a great job. Others however, believe that since there are still cases, even if not in America, there needs to be more done to protect the people.

This is all of the how, what, why, of BSE. They don’t really describe any argument they just give the facts about it. This is an extremely important source. It will give me all of the background I need for my research.

As long as Americans continue to eat meat, we will have a need for rules to protect us from food borne illness. Tom Lutey reports in his article that these rules keep getting stricter. However, he argues that even with this new rule, the regulations still are not strict enough. He gives a couple of example of things farmers should not be doing, and they are still getting away with.

Do you know what’s in your diet pills? According to Thomas Ropp, it could be mad cow. He states that even though the US has many regulations on beef, it has very few on diet pills. This is a dangerous concept. Americans could be taking something they think is healthy, when it could contain one of the deadliest diseases known to man. He suggests that the government is letting this fly by and something needs to be done about it. He feels it is important that Americans know what they are taking in. He also feels that if an American does get sick, then the government is going to have that life on their shoulders.
I know that you were worried about your draft, but it's not as bad as you think. You have a good understanding of your research, I think you just need to focus more on the research itself for this one rather than the topic of mad cow. On page two of the Grading criteria there are a list of questions on evaluating each source and they helped me so much because I was completly lost before I found them. I like that you give the authors view point, but you are going to want more sources to make your paper well rounded. I want to know more where you found your source. Is it reliable? How does it compare to other research?....... I think you could organize the spacing a bit because all of your sources run into the next and it's difficult to see which source I am looking at. One of the strategies given by the owl purdue web site says to get others involved, which would have been the most helpful to you. Since you didn't understand the criteria this would have been best and I see that you did try this but unfortunately I don't think that there are many of us left in this class. I wish I could have helped earlier, but I didn't finish these assignments myself until 11:45 last Saturday. Please keep up the writing cause I don't know what to comment on without you.
