THe first thing I did to complete this project was to research and find sources. Then I did a short annotation for each. Then I reread through all my annotations and picked the sources that seamed most relevant. I then wrote longer annotations for each of the 8 sources I picked. If I were to do it again I might pick different sources, but I am also happy with the ones I picked. I am also happy with the steps I took in this project so I will probably use those same steps for my next project.
I am most proud that I got through this project. I have never written a paper like this before so I was not sure what to expect, or even how to do it. The only thing that concerns me about the next project is not knowing where to start or how to do it. However, I tried my best and got some advice from Summer that really helped. If I had more time I would like other classmates to review my paper and give me more things i could do to make it better.
I didn't get much from turnitin.com but Summer really gave me some great tips that helped me go back and revise and add to my paper.
What I specifically worked on this week was just trying to do the assignment write since this is my first time doing something like this. However with the helpful tips and learning as I went, I felt I succeeded in writing my first review of research.I believe i achieve one of my course goals of writing this paper because I did it. I tried and revised and wrote and revised, and revised some more. I think for my next writing project, my goal will be to get an A and to write an interesting paper.

Yes it includes a reason and claim and they do connect. I think my audience will agree. The evidence I have is pretty compelling and my argument is pretty solid.
construct an argument D#10 HW#9
Is the government doing enough to protect the American people and stop the spread of mad cow?
The government needs to better regulate the beef industry to protect the American people from man cow.
Ethos: I base my claims on facts and back them up with facts. Yes my audience will find it to be persuasive. By only stating backed up facts, it demonstrates my credibility as an author.
Pathos: I will appeal to the fact that it could happen to my audience or their friends or family. Since these questions will get them thinking, it will be persuasive. Logos: I will use a lot of facts and research in my paper. This will make it persuasive and make my audience believe what I am saying.
I got really confused with the rest of the outline. Outlines don't help me write. If I do an outline I get bored and my writing gets sloppy and boring. I like to just write my paper then go back and organize my paper. I also go back and make sure all of the requirements are covered so that it is a good argument.

I am interested in diseases so i like my topic. Getting a good grade motivates me to keep going.
My topic is interesting to my classmates, so they have said. It doesn't affect their finances. I'm sure my audience eats beef so it affects the way they eat. The same with their friends and family.
I don't think it affects their employment but they might not apply to these beef factories after reading my essay.

Yes, No, to a degree, to much
I am completing this research for my research paper.
I would cross off no and too much
Yes "to a degree" would probably be most feasible to my audience. My teacher and fellow students will read my research. Most of my research agrees that the government is doing a lot to protect us but isn't doing a lot to stop the spread of it. I think this is the angle I will pursue in my argument.

essay discussion D#10 HW#3
I liked this essay. I thought it flowed well and that it had good voice to it. The author used the resources to their full advantage. The paper was clearly bias to that fact that teenagers are responsible and was in favor of them voting. However, if I was to revise and edit this. I would have mentioned why teenagers are not allowed to vote to day and why people in power do not let teenagers vote. He briefly mentions that people think teenagers are not well versed on the issues, but i think he should have elaborated on this a bit. If I was writing the essay, I would have chosen the other side of the argument because I believe teenagers are not educated enough to vote.

Is our government doing enough to protect us from mad cow?
My purpose of writing this is to educate on mad cow. It is also to raise questions of security on our food system. I chose this particular disease because not a lot is known about it and I am interested in learning more about it myself.
My audience is my fellow students and my teacher.
I find my self mistrusting the government so i might be bias as to weather or not they are doing a good enough job at protecting us.
My questions overlap in my interest in the subject as well as my enthusiasm in sharing it with others. This well help me to write a paper I enjoy as well as one others will enjoy.

This week i learned how to properly write a review of research paper. Since that is one of the course competencies, I feel like this weeks assignment on peer editing was very helpful. It also helped me achieve my personal goal to write a research review this week.I like peer editing. I find it very helpful when you have no clue what you are doing.

Grammer Assignment #4 D#9HW#7
THis week i decided to work on my commas. I wanted to work on commas this week because I either tend to over use or under use them. The grammer girl site was helpful. She had a whole article dedicated to the topic which I found very interestring. A great tip I learned is to say the sentence out loud and if you pause, there will most likely be a comma there. Also, commas go after transition words and side notes. I chose a paragraph from a lab write up.
Initial:
My hypothesis if plants don’t receive the proper nutrients then they will experience deficiency symptoms, was mostly supported. Plant one the control plant was supposed to be the tallest healthiest plant out of them all but it was only of medium height and had signs of death. Plant six was not supposed to die and it did, so we can’t really analyze it properly. The graph was also off the scale. Because plant one was not the tallest all of the percentages were extremely high in the comparison graph. These errors could be due to measurement errors by the students orit could be the plants weren’t cared for properly, or we could have just gotten a bad batch of plants.

The above link is the person I peer edited. I could only do one, since she was the only one to have her rough draft completed. I learned how to wright a research review from editing Summer's. She understood the assignment and wrote a beautiful review. I need to add to mine and I need to explain what each source is and the credentials and why it is a good source for my paper. Turnitin.com didn't suggest any changes for me and i didn't get any comments on my blog either. However, i still need to add some things to my paper and edit it before i turn it in.

My topic is the prevention of mad cow. Most of the sources I have gathered have used MLA if they are citing something. My audience will be expecting me to use MLA format in my research paper. I will be shearing my work online in my blog and sending it via turnitin.com to my teacher. Some of the publishers have their own guidelines, some don't.
Introduce secondary resources D#9 HW#3
This resource will be helpful in my argument because it gives the information i need to back up my statements and arguments. It also gives the background information that i need to write the paper. There are three authors for this article, however the audience will not know who they are. The authors all have strong credentials so they are very reliable.

I felt that this weeks reading and book assignments were a repeat of last week. I felt myself answering the same questions both weeks and I don't feel this weeks reading helped me at all. I got really confused when it came to writing my resource review, however, and hope that next week i will get peer edited and be able to see more examples of what I am supposed to do.

This resource will help me answer my question of how it works.
I only have computer copies because I don't like wasting paper and I don't have a printer.
This author has a Ph.D. so he obviously spent a lot of time researching the subject. He is backed by a major science website. The author is trying to provide information. The audience is the public. He wrote his paper easy to understand by anyone interested in science because that is who his audience is.
This resource answers how BSE effects the body. It is a different then the other resources but it connects with all of them

Throughout American history, beef has been a major food source. Today, we consume about 65 pounds per person per year. It is important that Americans realize that risk comes with eating meat. BSE(mad cow) is one of those diseases associated with beef. Although there hasn’t been a case of it reported in America yet, the risk is still there. BSE is an infection that starts in cows and is then is transferred to humans through the consumption of brain and spinal tissue. I want to explore the infection itself as well as to explore the issue of whether or not our government is doing enough to protect us. Some think that mad cow can be prevented and since there hasn’t been a case in America, our government is doing a great job. Others however, believe that since there are still cases, even if not in America, there needs to be more done to protect the people.

This is all of the how, what, why, of BSE. They don’t really describe any argument they just give the facts about it. This is an extremely important source. It will give me all of the background I need for my research.
Lutey, Tom. "Beef Rule Could Get Stricter." Tribune Business News [Washington] 20 Mar. 2009. ProQuest. Web. 3 Oct. 2009.
As long as Americans continue to eat meat, we will have a need for rules to protect us from food borne illness. Tom Lutey reports in his article that these rules keep getting stricter. However, he argues that even with this new rule, the regulations still are not strict enough. He gives a couple of example of things farmers should not be doing, and they are still getting away with.
Thomas Ropp. (2001, March 12).
Do you know what’s in your diet pills? According to Thomas Ropp, it could be mad cow. He states that even though the US has many regulations on beef, it has very few on diet pills. This is a dangerous concept. Americans could be taking something they think is healthy, when it could contain one of the deadliest diseases known to man. He suggests that the government is letting this fly by and something needs to be done about it. He feels it is important that Americans know what they are taking in. He also feels that if an American does get sick, then the government is going to have that life on their shoulders.

"BSE Information." US Depatment of Health and Human Services. FDA, 6 Aug. 2009. Web. 15 Oct. 2009.
Since the FDA has all the information about food borne illnesses, I figured this was a good website to visit. It had all kinds of information I could use in my paper. Of course it is a reliable source because it is the US government, although some would argue that is why it is not reliable, this organization is straight with the facts.
Fernau, Karen. "ARIZONA BEEF EATERS NOT FEARFUL OF MAD COW." Proquest. 7 Jan. 2004. Web. 15 Oct. 2009.
I found this article to be informative. It basically just states that Arizona's residents are not fearful because the infected cows from Washington were not shipped here. It also states that loopholes are allowing cows to be fed nerve and bone tissue of other cows which spreads the infection. I will be using this to answer the question of weather the government is doing enough to protect us.

Annotated BIb D#7HW#10
Linda Valdez. (2008, May 4).
This article tells how small farmers get along with their food animals. It states how they treat their animals with respect and even kill them humanly. This article is from a well known newspaper and it gives personal testimony which can be a good thing to use in an article. It also talks about both sides of the argument, even though it is a clearly bias opinion. This is a great article to use in my paper. I would use it to show that treating animals with respect doesn't cost more because many other farms do it. Small farms are cost efficient, so we know if they can do it so can the large companies.
Linda Valdez. (2004, July 4).
THis article talks about free range animals. This author is clearly bias toward free renge animals and backs she statements up with facts. This is a reliable source. I will use it to prove my point of cost efficiency and humane treatment.
Thomas Ropp. (2001, March 12).
This article states that cow brains are being put in to dietary supplements. This is exactly the article i need to show how unsuspecting BSE cam be. Its a reliable source because she backs up her statements as well as testimony and information about it.
LARRY McDONALD. (2001, April 16).
This article talks about all the preventative measures that the US government has put in place to prevent BSE here. This is another article this is excellent for my paper. I will use it to answer the question of weather our government is doing enough.

Grammer assignment#3 D#7 HW#11
This week I decided to focus on wording. I sometimes use the wrong word or the wrong tense of a word, or I word my paper in such a way that the sentence doesn't make sense. For my editing this week, I chose a paragraph from an essay i wrote on the Vietnam war.
Original:
One night when Larry was in Vietnam, he was supposed to be on guard duty, which is basically just watching the outside of the camp for the enemy. This is a normal job that Larry had done several times before, so he wasn’t thinking anything of it. He reported for duty but the captain said that there were plenty of people so Larry’s services were not needed. Larry thought someone must have taken his place, so he went back to his tent to sleep. He said three men served on guard duty that night. The Vietcong attacked their camp that night and all three men were killed. If Larry had been serving that night, he would have been the one killed and I would not be here to tell his story, for that man, Larry Boyd, is my dad.
Revised:
Larry was scheduled to be on guard duty one night, a job in which his only task was to watch the outside of the camp for the enemy. This is a normal job that Larry had done several times before, so he wasn’t thinking anything of it. He reported for duty, but oddly the officer in charge told Larry that another person was taking that shift so Larry’s services were not needed. Larry just went back to his tent to sleep after a hard day of work. Larry said three men served on guard duty that night. The Vietcong attacked the station that night and all three men were killed. If Larry had been stationed that night, he would have been the one killed and I would not be here to tell his story, for that man, Larry Boyd, is my dad.
I went to the dailywritingtips.com web site and got a few tips on how to word properly. Basically you just have to read it out loud to know if it sounds good. If you can say it without a problem, then your sentence is fine.

Take detailed notes D#7HW#9
This is basically an annotated biblography all over again. I have already annotated all of my resources> All of my resources are good resources and i have already paraphrased all of them. They are all credable and they are picked specifically by me for the information that i could use in my paper.
Summerize your resource D#7HW#8
The article in the Tribune talked about how the beef laws as they are now are not good enough. A new law is proposed in which all beef is to be kept under even stricter supervision in order to prevent people from getting sick. Beef will not come from outside the united states because most tainted beef comes from other countries. Some people support this ban and agree it is safer.
The complete ban is likely to hurt smaller ranches and feedlots, who survive on small profit margins, Bullard said. The cost of losing an otherwise healthy animal to injury could hurt small operators, who the USDA says accounts for 95 percent of slaughtered downer cows, believed to number about 1,500 annually.
If there is a complete ban of downer cattle, it would hurt small ranchers because they make up about 95% of slaughtered cattle.
I think it would be best to paraphrase here.

Maxime Schwartz is the authr and this is a good resource because a well known university i the publisher. The purpose of the text is to inform and students are the intended audience. The major claim is that mad cow is caused by a virus. She doesn't really give any resources in her paper only a link to many different sights that could help if one was going to research further on the subject. She has scientific evidence to back up her claims. She gives facts and numbers and studies to provide support. This resource will be very useful and it fits perfectly in with all my other sources.

Situate a Resource Rhetorically D#7HW#6
He has a PH.D in his field so he knows what he is talking about. He is affiliated with Howstuffworks.com, which is a well known science site and it is known for its truthful information. The author is trying to provide information about mad cow disease. The information in the article and the title gave me the clues about what the author was trying to do. The article is written in easy to understand terms so the audience is clearly the public. Also, the web sight is for the public so that is evidence that it is written for the public.
are you reading purposefuly or rhetorically D#7 HW#5
The only things I have read in the past few days are my english reading assignment, and my facebook page. The goal in reading my english book was to complete the assignment, my facebook was to see what my friends were up to. The goal I had for reading my english was to complete the assignment. I didn't pay attention to the rhetorical elements, i was just paying attention to the information. Understanding the rhetorical information didnt make any difference in larning the material.

WP#1 Reflection D#6 HW#11
The first thing i did in completing this prodject was to brainstorm. I then wrote what ever came to mind. I then went through and put alike paragraphs together and made sure the sentences when together. I then waited a week and revised and edited the paper and had a friend do it for me to. I then revised a third time and added a title. I dont think I would do anything differently next time because this process worked well for me and I will probably use this same process on the next writing assignment.
I am most proud of the whole thing. I think it turned out nicely. My only concern is that I missed something. I did however, revisit the assignment criteria and made sure it matched. If I had more time i would probably ask others opinions to make sure it matched the criteria. I didn't revise my worked biased on turnitin.com because i only had a 1% match and that was a technical term so I felt I didn't need to revise because of that. I worked on spelling for this project. I think it helped me be more careful because when i revised, and even while writing i was specifically looking out for my spelling. I think for the next project I will work on sentence structure just to make some improvements. The course outcome i was leaning towards was to get an A in the class. However, I became really interested in my subject and when that happened, I started writing because i wanted everyone else to be interested in my subject too. I did feel I achieved this goal because everyone was leaving comments on how they couldn't wait to read my paper. I think my next outcome will be for everyone to understand my opinion and to lean towards it as well. But if not, an A is always nice. ;)

Editing Stragities D#6 HW#9
I used three of the stratigies listed on the websites to proof read my paper. I used read out loud, know what you are looking for, and edit with a partner. These strategies all worked well for me as you will be able to see in the revised version of my paper.
Annotated biblography D#6HW#7
Walters, Mark J. Six Modern Plagues: And How We Are Causing Them. Island press, 2004. E-brary. Web. 3 Oct. 2009. .
This book has six different diseases but i want to focus on mad cow. It tells a story about the discovery of mad cow and how the first case of mad cow.It also tells many facts about it. This is a great resource to use because it is in the MCC library under non fiction, and it wasn't written too long ago. It is also a popular work so i would say it is a reliable source. This resource will help me answer the question of wht is it and where it came from and even how it spreads.
Schwartz, Maxime. How The Cows Turned Mad. University of California, 2003. E-brary. Web. 3 Oct. 2009..
This book also has many different diseases but the chapter on mad cow talks about where it came from and how it was discovered. However, what makes it different is that it talks about weather or not mad cow is serous. It gives excellent examples of cases of mad cow as well. This is a crediable resource because it comes forom a well known university. Although it is a little older, it is still an excellent resource. I plan to use this in a section of my paper that discusses wheather or not this is a serious problem. I also will use the cases of mad cow as examplesin my paper.
Lutey, Tom. "Beef Rule Could Get Stricter." Tribune Business News [Washington] 20 Mar. 2009. ProQuest. Web. 3 Oct. 2009..
This article talked about how cows are treated and what they considered "safe" before. It then goes on to say that the rules were to lax and that the FDA wants to issue stricter rules reguarding beef. This is a crediable sourse because it is a well known newspaper. I will use this article when i talk about if our governmet is doing enough to protect us.
Freudenrich, Ph.D., Craig. "How Mad Cow Disease Works." 08 March 2001. HowStuffWorks.com. 03 October 2009.
This site gave all the little details about mad cow. It ives facts on where it comes from and what it is and how it works. This site is crediable because it is a well known science site and it even has its own tv show. also the author has a Ph.D which means he has spent years learning about his subject. I will use this in my paper in the paragraph of what mad cow is and what i does.

What does your research plan look like?D#6 HW#8
I need to collect data on what the disease is, how it is spread, the symptoms, and how to prevent it. The resources i need are periodicals, and scientific research. I will start my search in the e-brary of the schools online data base. I will also search well known science sites like discovery.com, sciencedaily.com, scientificamerican.com to get information. I will also go to the MCC library to try and find some books on the subject. I cant really give a time line because I am a "seize the day" kind of a person and i do things when i have the time. I do however, plant to get things done by the deadlines the teacher gives us.
Review of essay D#6HW#3
I didn't find this piece very interesting. However, I like how he used progression through history in his paper. It was a cool to see how things progressed through time. It is a nice layout of the paper which I might consider using in my own. It is a little bit of an example of what we are doing for WP#3, however it didn't cover all of he criteria. He never said how he was going to use these sources in his paper or even how they applied to his paper. This wasn't in an annotated bibliography format at all. If I was going to revise it, I would tell what my resources are and how I would use them in my paper.
Search a virarity of resourced D#6 HW#6
The internet is always the best place to start. However, I don't think there are very many blogs that are discussing my topic so those wont be helpful. I could use news related web sites to help since mad cow is all over the news. Browsing through periodicals could also help me know where to look and help me to make sure that there is enough information about my topic to do a research paper on. I think the best resources for me to use are video files, books, periodicals, and the web. I will find the best resources on the web because the web has all these. I think the best static resources are books and web sites. The best syndicated resource for me would be periodicals. I don't really think dynamic resources will work for me. I will base the credibility on where the information is located and how old the information is and if it is a well know resource that is known to be credible. I also like what the book said about asking your self the questions about the resource. I will make sure to ask those questions for my resources to make sure they are credible.

Key Words D#6HW#5
Keywords: mad cow, abuse, humans, disease
These words will work well because they are the bases for my topic so I am sure these words are the best for my topic.
Word that wont work: animal, meat, health
I know these are the least likely to work because these are o general of words by them selves and they could rout me to many other things that i don't want to.
Terms for a search: mad cow, disease, abuse, humas
Terms i have found: transfer, warning signs, symptoms, illness, concerns, help

primary or secondary Research? D#6 HW#4
Purpose: I want my readers to think about what they are eating and which companies are known for "healthy" beef so they will eat that beef instead of tainted beef. For this research I plan to use secondary research because if I went to the beef companies themselves they would just lie and say they dont abuse thei animals and that their beef is safe.
Audience:I think cold hard acts are the most convincing. Scientific research will be the best for my paper. The specific research of secondary. Testimonies are not facts they are just opinions. Every one has their own opinion so facts are the best for my paper.
Topic/question: The information i need to answer my question is contained in secondary research only.
Author: I have several weeks to complete the assignment. I have access to the internet with holds all of the information I need, however if I need to I can use the MCC library. I don't really have access to anyone to help me with my research since most meat farms are out of the country. It looks like I will be conducting secondary research all the way.
